Brendan the Black Cockatoo on Bruny Island is the fourth illustrated children's storybook in the On Bruny Island animal series. The others are Little Spot, Quentin the Quoll, and Suzi P the Swift Parrot.
These stories attempt to make their readers of all ages aware of the effect of man’s influence on our natural environment. Also how the results of that influence can affect the animals and birds that share our planet with us. The stories deal with animals on Bruny Island because the relatively unspoiled habitat  on most of the island make the problems the animals face more obvious.
The stories also aim to point out to children, on a human level, the benefits of bravery and resilience as well as the importance of family.
